About the Author

Gill Holland was born in Lynch, Kentucky, and grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was educated at Episcopal High School, Washington and Lee University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also studied Mandarin and Classical Chinese at Stanford University and in Taiwan and Beijing. Most of his college teaching career was at Davidson College, where he taught English, writing, and Chinese and Scandinavian literature in translation. He also taught at Duke University, the University of Houston, Redlands University, Tunghai University in Taiwan, Beijing Normal University, and Capital Normal University in Beijing. He also had a teaching Fulbright at the University of Łódź, Poland. He and his wife Siri have taken students abroad to study at the University of Cambridge and Capital Normal University. He has lectured and published at home and abroad on English, Norwegian and Chinese literature and art. In addition to poems, stories, and translations of Chinese poetry, he has published a book of translations of the journals of the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (The Private Journals of EDVARD MUNCH: We Are Flames Which Pour Out of the Earth, University of Wisconsin Press, 2005.) He and Siri have been blessed with three children and many grandchildren. The family has close ties to family and friends in Oslo.
